Powerless Trilogy- Lauren Roberts

Powerless by Lauren Roberts is a young adult fantasy novel set in the kingdom of Ilya, where a deadly plague left some survivors with supernatural abilities (“Elites”) and others without (“Ordinaries”). The story follows Paedyn Gray, an 18-year-old Ordinary who must hide her powerless status by posing as a Psychic, someone who can read minds. This secret is put at risk when she saves a prince and is forced to compete in the deadly Purging Trials, an event designed to showcase Elite abilities, one she doesn’t believe she’ll survive. This trilogy has no explicit content, but the romantic relationships and characters are written extremely well(this is coming from someone who doesn’t usually cry over romance, but this series did it).
One thing I really appreciated was world-building because Lauren Roberts shifts us to new locations in varying ways, sometimes abruptly and or gradually so she doesn’t lose us completely, it’s not overcomplicated to the point you can’t discern the worldbuilding from the plot, and most importantly, we get different bits of information at varied intervals, meaning we’re eased into it and a whole bunch of information isn’t dumped on us all at once. The worldbuilding is also spaced out between the books so it doesn’t feel like all of the world building was carelessly crammed into one of the books, which showcases her efforts to carefully expand and space out the expansion.
I was definitely unsure of just how good this series was, because other than reading it, there was no way to discern whether or not it was overhyped. But this series was definitely worth my time and justifiably hyped in my opinion.
I’d recommend this series for 13 and up if you can handle lots of blood, broken bones, etc, but if you read it, BRACE yourself for a whole lot of trauma inflicted onto these characters and some amazing character development. The series gets even more interesting after …complications in the Purging Trials! If you’d like to read the trilogy, all three books are on Kindle Unlimited and available in bookstores and libraries around you.
Have a great week, everyone, and I’ll see you next time!
