EPIC the Musical – Jorge Rivera Herrans

Epic the Musical is a retelling of Homer’s Odyssey in song form, and to be honest, it is one of my favourites. Each character is given a melody or an instrument that represents them, and everyone is introduced clearly and effectively. Not to mention that you can actually tell what’s happening as you listen with a concise storyline WITH character development! Jorge, the creator, really involved his fans in the process of creating the musical, sharing fun facts about the characters, cut storylines, and delving into cut songs, explaining why they didn’t make it into the musical. I personally am a big fan of mythology, and I love the way he put a new and enjoyable twist on the actual Greek myth, but he’s designed it in such a way that it’s enjoyable even for people who don’t typically like mythology-related fiction! I was a bit unsure about it at first, but I warmed up to it after listening to the songs more closely!

It’s not as accurate as some people would like, but Jorge took creative liberties, and he interpreted some things differently, but EPIC is first and foremost entertainment! And it’s incredibly enjoyable! I would honestly recommend it for 12 and older because there’s a bit of violence and toward the end are connotations of things that aren’t really appropriate for younger kids and a whole massacre in the end.

If you’re interested in listening to it, head to Spotify as the entirety of the musical is on there. If you like watching as well as listening, there’s many talented animators across several platforms that have dedicated a lot of time to making animatics for EPIC!

It really is a great musical, so go check it out! See you next time, everyone!
